Jade Care Guide
Jade (scientific name Crassula ovata) are an easy to grow house plant that thrive with little care. Jade plants thrive in high light, when thinking of selecting a home for your jade choice a sunny window. Jade plants are extremely tolerant of non-ideal environments and can grow in a wide array of lighting and watering conditions, make sure to not over water your jade as this will cause root rot.
Make sure that you pot your jade with fast draining soil. Water your jade when the top 2 inches of the soil dry out, we recommend using a soil moisture meter to check this as they are more accurate. Never let your jade fully dry out but be mindful not to allow it to stay wet for too long. If your jade leaves begin to turn bloated and yellow this is most likely from over watering, if the leaves become dry and begin to fall off this is from under-watering.
Jade plants need full sun to grow properly, if they are not receiving enough light they will grow leggy and can be stunted. jade plants can be moved to full sun outdoors during the summer months, make sure night time temperatures do not drop below 50°F and when moving your jade from inside to outside make sure to pick a cloudy day so they can adjust to the higher light.
Jade plants should be fertilized every 6 months. We recommend using a water soluble fertilizer at half strength. When fertilizing make sure to pre water your jade before watering with fertilizer, applying fertilizer to dry soil will burn the jades roots.
Jade plants are mildly toxic to humans, causing vomiting and nausea but are considered extremely toxic to both dogs and cats by the ASPCA. Jade plants should never be kept in households with curious cats or dogs.
