Our Flower Farm

We don’t just source our flowers from local farms we try to grow as many blooms as possible to provide the freshest flowers at the best prices. We grow anything from Amaranthus to Zinnias on our small 1 acre farm in Collegeville Pennsylvania, located about an hour from our retail store in Merion Station. The flowers we grow on the farm are some of the freshest available, picked just hours before they are designed and sent out to you! In this article I’m going to go over some tips and tricks to flower growing that have helped us to grow the best quality flowers, it didn’t all come to us at once though it has been a learning experience.

We started our farm in March of 2020 to combat the limited supply brought on by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. It began with just a few rows of dahlia, zinnias, and cosmos but has grow over the years. We now grow on 1 acre and have a 16ft by 45ft greenhouse to start our plants as early as possible.

Growing the best flowers starts with using the best quality soul. We compost all organic waste at our retail store using reusable landscape bags to minimize waste. We get almost 200 pounds of organic compost added to our large compost pile at our farm each week. From there we mix in horse manure from a local horse farm in Collegeville to add a lot of needed nutrients to the soil. The next step is to mix the fresh soil from the compost pile into our beds. We use a rototiller to do this job much quicker, the machine churns the soil making it easier for the plants to grow into the beds.

It all begins in early March, we grow most of our flowers from seed, bulbs, or small plugs so we have to start them early in our greenhouse. We plant the seeds in grow trays until they mature and are ready to plant into the beds. Our bulb plants like Dahlia are planted directly into the beds in our greenhouse. Lisianthus is one of the earliest flowers that actually prefers the cool snaps of March, we put these flowers into our beds as soon as possible. For the majority of flowers we have to wait until the last frost which usually falls in May, from there we start planting our Amaranthus, zinnia, cosmos, strawflowers, sunflowers, celosia, coxcomb, and more.

The next step is to diligently water all of these freshly planted blooms. We water our garden daily, unless it rains. In just a few short weeks many of the flowers are ready to harvest and will continue to produce through the spring and summer. Our Dahlia are the late bloomers, they don’t start to flower until the beginning of the Fall. Then in the late Fall we dig up all the bulb plants and store them in a cool and dry place until next year when the cycle continues.

We started this farm with the simply mission to increase sustainability and provide the freshest flowers at the best prices possible. This farm has been a joy to see grow and thrive and nothing makes us happier than knowing that our customers love the fresh flowers that we watched grow up from seed! Thank you for taking a look at our flower farm!
